I want to add a scope or red dot sight for handgun hunting, 50 to 100-yard range. Any suggestions? Model 40 8-inch barrel with the shroud.

No opinion on scope or red dot but use Drill and Tap, not clamp on mount. Recoil is too powerful for clamp on. Clamp on only can work for 357 mag small frame.

I have shot and own both. I would vote Red Dot. I have one on a 7445 and have shot 3 deer with it. Much easier to follow a moving deer in the woods with both eyes open.
My Red Dot mount clamps directly to my vented rib. I have not had any issues. I have used up to 300 grain bullets for an elk hunt with no issues. I have read other people having issues but I have not. I purchased the gun used with a 2 1/2x scope. It had 3 rings holding the scope to the mount. That mount also clamped to the vented rib.
