May be a stupid question but... are barrell tools for .357 and .44 the same?

Nope.
I believe The Dia. of the barrel nut is different. EWK (over on right side of this page) has them both at a very reasonable price.

MarkJ is right, the .357 is a small frame & the .44 is a large frame. The tools & nuts are different sizes. To give you a little more perspective, here's a pair of barrels for small & large frames...

3 sizes if you include the Lil' Dan which is the smallest of the Dan's.
this is as far as the nuts! wrenches are caliber specif!

?? My tools for my Model 15s work fine on my Lil Dan. (Barrels are NOT interchangeable, but the tool appears to be)

Lil Dan takes a SLIGHTLY smaller wrench than the normal 15-2 wrench. Yours may fit, most won't. My Lil dan was nowhere close to being able to accept a 15-2 wrench.
