So while cleanin my pair of 15s I was struck by a difference.. I went back and compared all my blued 15-s to my new 715 .. this seems to be found only on the 715.
Blued 15-2 Cylinder ... flat
SS 715 has a lip around the outside of the cylinder
So what gives?
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

Circa 1979-1980 according to original owner. A full recessed cylinder. I have changed the rear sight to white outline. It has 2.5# trigger in SA mode, trigger mounted over travel screw and is my favorite DW of the 4 I have.

So what's the deal with the flat cylinders? Were they before or after the recesed?

Before.
The recessed came along later...the reason for the design is still speculative.

Odd... S&W did away with the recessed chambers as a cost cutting measure as it wasn't really necessary anymore with modern brass construction.
It's a nice touch & I'm always on the lookout for a nice P&R Smith.
Pretty sure my new-to-me '79 15-2 has recessed chambers. It's still in People's Republik pistol jail till Feb 10.
