I recently purchased a couple of 10" barrel assemblies.I notice there is a different style front sight on them.Is this typical of longer assemblies?

They almost certainly have Patridge front sights, a black blade type sight angling up front to rear, with no colored insert.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

its a lower profile,a little wider and no place for an insert

You will see from THIS that there are a variety of heights on the Patridge as well a one width variation, and they are all black/blued steel, no colored insert
