I got this photo from a GunBroker auction of the 744 of Palmer manufacture.  I've never seen this on Monson or Norwich guns so I can only assume this was done during the Palmer era.  I sort of like it myself.

That's neat...I didn't know Palmer had that type of porting; I thought that was a Norwich addition.  I know the Monson style with small holes in the barrel and slots on the shroud on each side of the rib was problematic.  If not cleaned religiously, the buildup would make shroud removal impossible.

I have one of those compensated barrels with the Dan Wesson signature and the date on the wrapping paper in the original box is April 1979.  Don't know if they were still in Monson at that time or if they had moved.
