I recently saw a barrel that was slab sided with a round compensator on the muzzle end of the slab. Does anyone know who manufactured this and how accurate it is? Thanks.

This is almost certainly an EWK EH shroud with and EWK screw on compensator (which replaces the barrel nut)
Check the EWK link on the right sidebar.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yup, that's all EWK. The compensator threads on in place of the barrel nut and uses shims between the frame and shroud to get it to clock right.

Thanks for clearing that up. How effective is the compensator with mild .38 spl loads?

I don't own one, IMO the comp is maybe more cosmetic than functional, especially on an EH shroud. My guess is that the extra shroud weight goes much farther in taming muzzle flip than the comp will.
BUT there is a lot to be said for the "cool factor" as well.
