OfflineJust getting around to checking the Barrel vs Cylinder Relationship of some Components...For Cast Lead Boolit Shooting.
Luckily I have an Extra Crane and Cylinder Assembly..so I was able to Match the smallest Bore Barrel (2-1/2") to the Small Throated Cylinder, that I have...and also Match a Fairly Normal Cylinder, to the More Normal Bore/Groove Size Barrel (6").
Now Raining...so I cannot shoot to see if it has made as Much Difference as I am Guessing it will...with Cast Projectiles...
Method was to Slug Barrel, then check for Fit in Cylinder Throats.. so Sizes as Mic'ed are only Fairly close..I got fairly Luckiy, in that one Cylinder is quite Small Throat indeed..like .357, but the 2-1/2 barrel is just about that.. but slightly Bigger...Not a Good thing..but, will shoot for Effect...While the other cylinder comes in with 358+ throats and the 6" barrel Grooves measure about 358-
ie the slug from barrel will pass thru the Throats with very Little Pressure...
Will Post Results if there is Any Interest!!

OfflineYes, I for one would definitely be interested in the results! This is an area of discussion that rarely comes up. A lot of us (myself included) shoot jacketed ammo almost exclusively. However I will occasionally buy some factory ammo that uses plated bullets which behave similarly to cast. Have to admit that I’ve never slugged a barrel, but of my three DW’s only one has .358 chamber throats; the others are a tight .357

OfflineProbably the most important factor in revolver accuracy is its dimensions. Measurements should be greatest at the throat and least at the muzzle, with no swings back up in any part of the bore. A funnel of sorts from the rear to the front.
I check all my cylinders with a pin gauge. The dimension should be the same on all throats, and the throats should be just slightly larger (.001-.002) than the bore diameter. The bullet can be even a little larger (.001-.002) than the throat. Otherwise, you could experience leading issues.
The issue at hand is bullet obturation. Lead bullets need to completely seal the gas, in the bore, behind the bullet. Otherwise, there is lead cutting that will leave streaks in the bore. It's not as important when firing jacketed bullets since the trailing edge/ base is encapsulated. To complicate matters, leading can also be caused by poor lube, amount of lube, velocity, bullet hardness, etc...
That's why I cast my own boolits- but it's a hobby unto itself.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Offline^^ I too Cast My own...almost Exclusively.. I have some Guns that have Never had any Projectile roar down the Bore, except ones I created!
I do Not see the Need for Pin Gauges in My Repertoire.. As I have always simply Slugged the Bore, then checked slug "fit" in Throat..
dimensions be Damned, if the slug goes thru the Throat...it is as Close as I am likely to get it!! So Yes...some Throats Have Been "modified" here..
Oh and Experimenting with Boolit Hardness is also a Major Contributor to Accuracy...as the Very Same Boolit..too Hard, or too soft, can and Has, caused Problems.. One Gun preferring Harder, another, Softer...More Art, than Science..
I have found that some Guns simply do Not cooperate unless Major Surgery is Performed...so.. Lucky Me..Gas Checks to the Rescue..

OfflineNice day today...for doing some shooting..Since the DW with the 6" BA setup, is ready to Rock...(with it's own Matched Cylinder and Yoke, and thanks to Snake-Eye, and Lance at TriggerShims), It went First. Trying my Sized .358 125RF boolits first.. chronoed a Bit slow (experimenting with a Different Powder) at 963 fps , and did Not really impress me with accuracy.. I really came to attention tho, firing some of my Pet 155g Checked SWC's, over a Middlin load of H110... Man...This thing shoots like a House Afire!! I am Tickled... no better shot than I am standing, it was unbelievable what this Little Gun is Capable Of... I am Stoked.. Back to it...Maybe even set up a Proper Target... But... Ringing Steel is so darn much Fun!!
