I have been looking at buying one of these S&W Hunter 44 magnums for a while. came across this one. I have bought other guns from these guys before they always sell me direct no tax no CC fees. What does the Lew Horton mean? He seems to tell me had to do with the serial number. I do love the looks at the gun and the adjustable front sight. I believe these were made in the 80's it's a 29-3. anyway what do you think? They had it on GB last week open bid $1899 no bidders. Maybe because of the govt shutdown nobody wants to spend. anyway I think I can get it for $1700 out the door. No tax and that's shipped. Thanks!Screenshot-2025-10-20-10.48.39-PM-1.pngImage Enlarger

PS check out the front sight! It's like a scope adjustable!

Lew Horton is a large S&W distributor on the West Coast, I think Washington. S&W makes special releases for them. That is a 4 place Silhouette front sight. The 29-3 was made around 1983 I think. The 29-3 has a tendency to freewheel the cylinder when shooting powerful Silhouette hand loads. The problem was fixed in the 29-4. Regular loads did not cause a problem. In 1985 S&W made an 83/8" version,

I bought one in as new condition but no box about 10 years ago for $600 from my dear deceased FFL buddy. I never shot it but still have it. I have seen them sell for $1200 to $1500 over the years. Considering how prices have risen $1700 doesn't sound unreasonable. It is the first full lug 29 S&W made I think.

  Hope this helps.

Thanks! Sure is a bad ass looking gun! It is supposed to be extra polished by Lew Horton. I'm thinking of getting it. having the original box and paperwork helps. I wonder why they do not make front sights like that anymore. I guess you could click it to adjust from 50 yards to 200 yards. Had 4 clicks 50/100/150/200

That's funny! They should have put the pics of all four animals on the side of the barrel! I still have not made a deal on it. The seller does not want to come off of his $1800 price. I'm trying to wait him out for $1700 I may lose it but it's the thrill of the chase! also I believe I will get it. The newer models of the hunter are quite nice there are performance center guns. these newer guns are selling right around $1650 to $1800 The notches will accept a scope ring made for gun. Pretty smart!Screenshot-2025-10-21-11.48.00-PM.pngImage Enlarger

I am waiting for the next "Bill Davis" (Fluted Slabside with Airstocrat Winged sight) S&W gun to come up for auction.   I know the design/model I want.   Lost an auction while working.   Tried to steal it on GB, but someone else stole it before I could check bids. cry

when I started reading your post, I said gee that looks familiar then I remembered I purchased one over 10 years ago and I don’t think I’ve seen it since then, so I went on the hunt and found it. It is the 29-3 Lew Horton classic hunter. Interesting to note, barrel is not ported like yours. I believe the gun originally came with rubber stocks so this one had to have been changed out to the wood stocks. according to S&W Customer Service, was manufactured Sept 88, so it would’ve been one of the last ones manufactured.

I would love to take this one out and shoot it, but it is completely unfired. I don’t have many true collectibles which I think this one is, so I will leave it alone and shoot by 44 Dan’s.

Thanks for the memories.

My wife fell in the yard and broke her wrist last year. Worst pain she ever felt. She had a great surgeon and it has healed faster than expected but with plates and screws it will never be normal. My condolences.

My wife broke both bones below the wrist and some of the wrist bones were crushed. They used cadaver bone to rebuild them. She has a bit of osteoarthritis. But she is fine now. I can tell how she is improving by the lessening of the complaining. She hardly ever mentions it 8 months later.
