22Lr & 22WMR CYLINDERS. My first 22Mag firearm ever. Bought it from my LGS last weekend, finally got there to pick it up after the mandatory IL 72-hour waiting period. No sales tax since it was a consignment.
First thing, giving her a good cleaning, very dirty. I’ve found Ballistol is a great cleaner and protector. I learned about Ballistol from Hickok45 many many years ago now.
Looking forward to shooting for the first time…Hopefully this Sunday, April 13, 2025. Supposed to be 73-degrees & sunny here.

I went through a High Standard period in my early years of collecting. I divested most except for two HS MK IV. One has both cylinders. They call it the Camp gun. Early Camp guns have a 4" barrel. The western looking High Standards in 22lr are alloy frame. Not durible and not accurate IMHO . The High Sierra and Double 9 are steel frame but still no more accurate. The MK 1 and 4 are beautiful guns with the Python look but their accuracy is poor too. The only HS revolvers I would want are the Dan Wesson made guns and the Crusader. The Derringers are only good if you are within a couple of feet of the hoodlum. The trigger pull is so hard that you better push it into their belly before firing.

I installed the 22Mag cylinder and that was reallly easy to do. I loaded up 9 rounds of 22 mag. The cylinder was kinda hard to get closed, but finally got it closed. It shot well and it seemed relatively accurate. We were probably 30 feet from our steel targets. I was able to hit the smallest 4” target relatively easily. Took a few shots to figure out the fixed sights, but once I figured them out I hit decent. The wife was able to hit a decent rate too. The part that sucked was unloading the cylinder. It was very hard to get open. Then the ejector would not push the spent cases outward. They were stuck in the cylinder. So I grabbed the cylinder with one hand and tapped the ejector rod with the other. I wanted to prevent bending the crane. That eventually worked. The shells popped up, BUT they still wouldn’t come out. When I released the ejector rod all 9 shells went right back into their holes. This kept happening. I finally got them out by using my fingernails to pull them out one at a time. The biggest issue while doing this was the lack of space between the cylinder and frame when open and pushing the ejector rod. The rim of the spent shells are only about 1/16” from the frame as they slide out of the cylinder. It would be very easy to scratch the frame during this process. Thankfully I did not scratch it. Because of these issues, each cylinder reload took about 5 minutes to complete.

got to love High Standards! sorry your having trouble with your cylinder but these guns especially thee convertibles are finicky. lets face it they were cheap guns though tackle box guns. I found my 22 magnums that came that way instead of being a convertible work better. The way you switch out cylinders is a bit suspect. The cylinder is not supported by a very good lock so you get some play in it. I have two of the stainless (matt finish) Mark IV in 22 magnum and they shoot real good. The older High Standards in 22 LR shoot pretty good think about it they are all aluminum except the cylinder and inner barrel. Hell they only cost $39 back in the early 60's. The Mark series with all steel frame sold for $129 in 1974 that's the year they started making the all steel frame. I'm sure a good S&W 22 magnum would be a better shooter but also more $$$ but the all steel frames are now going for $500 to $700 so not much less than a S&W 22 magnum. I tell you my new S&W M&P Tempo barrel 22 magnum with the 30 round mag is a beauty! What a gun! First 22 mag auto that solved the feeding problems that seem to affect all earlier 22 mag auto's! I still love the high Standard but more on the collector side. Oli Dog is right about one thing. If you want the ultimate High Standard only a Crusader will do!

It is bad ass! I really like the 22 magnum as a good alternative to some of the other ammo out there and I think it's a good defense round also. That's why I like the High Standard guns since they hold 9 rounds. S&W came out with this 22 magnum Semi Auto last year and two things caught my attention. first 30 round magazine that's a real plus and that's not an extended magazine either. Second was this new tempo system I don't quite understand it all but I do know most 22 magnum autos throughout the years always had feeding problems. This Tempo barrel somehow releases gas later in the stroke making the gun "run" without problems that have plagued 22 mag autos for years. I bought one and man I was impressed. You need one to go thru all those rounds of 22 magnum. I do know they have a list of approved brands and types of 22 magnum ammo to use in this gun and your ammo is approved and on their recommended ammo list. They had this gun on sale for $499 last month in a combo pac with range bag and 4 magazines. I looked just now they still have the deal for $529.99 at Gunbuyer plus $10 shipping still a very good deal! I paid almost $600 for mine. You can find them in desert tan or green but at a higher price. The only other drawback I found to this gun is they do not offer a threaded barrel yet for it. The 22 magnum is quite a bit louder than a 22 LR! I would sure like to be able to screw on my 5.7x28 suppressor onto my 22 magnum. I'm hoping some company will offer one in the aftermarket world! It may be you can't use a suppressor with the 22 mag and the tempo barrel system but I have a 5.7x28 S&W also it looks exactly like the 22 magnum and also uses the tempo barrel system so I figure they should be able to make one for the 22 mag!

No way around this? What about a private sale? I take it a FFL can't take a delivery of a gun like this. What if it had a 10 round magazine? That's some crazy laws so that's for the whole state? Can a person cross into another state and buy a gun with a higher mag count and bring it back legal or is that type of mag just forbidden in the whole state?

If you recall, I was trying to buy that 7414 off GB from Ohio. Originally the seller said no sales to IL. I thought I’d just drive over to Ohio to pay/pick it up. Turns out it’s against federal law to buy handguns out-of-state and take them back across state lines. You can buy a handgun out-of-state, but the seller has to ship it to an FFL in your home state. If it’s not legal, no xfer of that handgun can happen legally which puts the FFL doing the xfer on the line.
If the removable magazine(s) is 15 rounds or less, I can legally buy it. Private sale from out of state still has to go thru FFL if the handgun is being shipped. I don’t know the rules regarding the seller coming into IL with the handgun and doing a private transaction while in Illinois.
Suppressors no way allowed.

Yes if it comes with a 15-round or less magazine it’s legal in IL. If it comes with no magazine it’s legal too. Nope, nobody will sell a magazine greater than 15 rounds mail order to a person with an IL address. My guess is I could drive to MO and walk in a gun store and buy a magazine of any size and not get checked, but I’d be breaking the law if I bring it into IL. I’m guessing I could leave it at a friend’s house in MO, but what good is that?

I got you. I was reading up on the laws there it looks like there is a lawsuit going thru the house in IL there trying to get that part of the law revoked so stay tuned. You can't buy a AR-15 right now there I think also but they could be changing that. Good luck with it I hope they change things there. I guess what I was reading is a lot of folks go into the closest state and buy guns and bring them back illegally but not a good idea if you ever got pulled over with a illegal gun there you can go to jail. We take it for granted here in AZ we have the most wide open laws in the country. There is not even a concealed carry law here anyone can carry a concealed gun here without any license. also you can buy a gun from any private person with just proof of age. I don't really like that law or i'm conflicted with it they call it the gun show law because there are thousands of guns changing hands here every day and lots of people are selling them for big profit to US citizens that are moving them across the border. Barrett's sell for 3 times the purchase price as that's a favorite gun of the cartels. I do not sell any guns local much anymore here if I do I get a copy of there license and keep it with a bill of sale so in case the police come knocking on the door about a gun you sold someone you can prove you were with in the law when selling it. I would rather sell something thru GI so a purchase goes thru a FFL though I can see both sides of it.
