I picked up a NYPD service revolver from 1992, the model 64-5 with the S/N on the outside of the frame and NY-1 designation. This is a DA only revolver and is a terrific shooter with a fantastic DA trigger pull. These were only issued a couple of years if I remember correctly and then the NYPD switched to 9mm semi-autos, I believe starting with the S&W 39xx series, although some officers were still carrying revolvers as late as 2018. I also got a period correct patrolman's holster from the same period, but it's in the bedroom & the wife is asleep. I'll post a pic of the holster tomorrow.

That's cool. So chambered for .38SPL only, or .357? Sorry, I'm not up on my Smiff's.confused

I think all those were 38 special. What does DA mean district attorney? Detective? I know they called these small carry guns Detective Specials! I was going to buy one of these last year but I have a lil Dan kind of the same gun! Can only imagine being a undercover back in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's & 70's Carrying a small 5 shot 38 special. Most had a ankle gun also.

Yes, it's 38 special. And yes, it's double action only. Even if it had a spur, it can't be locked back in the cocked position for a single action pull. Below is a pic with the traditional patrolman's Jay-Pee holster.

BTW, it's a k-frame, 6 shot 38 special, and as much as I like my Lil Dan, it's a much better shooter.

Will it handle +P rated ammo ?

With no problem, it’s a S&W k-frame chambered in 38 special, the same frame as my model 547 chambered in 9mm, the same as the model 19 in 357 magnum. I don’t plan on ever using it for self defense, but I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot +p ammo if I did decide to use it for my carry gun.

That's a beaurty, Jertex. I've seen a few for sale but usually $2k and too much for me. Ruger made a Speed Six DAO 3" 38spl for the NYCPD as well as a DAO Service Six 4" 38spl. My Ruger nycpd revolvers shipped in 1987 to nycpd. More recruits chose the NY-1.
