You just cannot claim self defense here, I'm sorry but there is no threat posed by someone OUTSIDE your front door that does not invade your home, or demonstrate the ability to invade your home from outside with a weapon (firearm, bomb, multiple assailants, ...).

Come inside the house, WAY different story.

This guy pays the price for thinking that the gun would protect him.

The Citizen protects him/her self as the law allows, inside or outside the home, in response to the threat
