What do you guys recommend for cleaning the exterior of our SS guns?
I have always used NOXON 7 on a lot on SS before, but I wonder if it will be to harsh for the DW. I don't want to polish it…just clean it real good.

I do too, but if you don't want high polish, work very lightly. Mothers can take you all the way to super shiny high polish (but DOES take some work).
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I like Flitz for a good cleaning without too much shine. I've also used marine cleaner wax, it will remove the haze on SS and leave a protective wax coating behind to inhibit corrosion. Seapower is the brand I usually use as I always have some on hand from my boating activities. Meguires also makes a good cleaner wax.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

If you are cleaning powder residue or other dirt or crud from a stainless DW I recommend you not use anything with any abrasive in it, like flitz or mothers, because you will change the finish (unless you want to change the finish). I've done it.
I recommend kroil. Let it soak on the hard spots and with rubbing/wiping it will dissolve & remove even oxidation.
If you want to return the original finish of "brushed stainless" when you have light scratches or handling marks, then use 3M sanding pads in the green color. They are the closest to the original finish I have been able to find. I recently used them to remove some numbers that were scratched into the bottom of some shrouds I bought and you cannot tell the difference from new. Note that it takes some elbow grease and significant time rubbing!
I have done the hand polish to a bright nickel finish and I love the result, but I would not do it again. Way more work than expected!
Just experiment and find what works for you.

These lead remover polishing cloths from Birchwood Casey work AMAZINGLY well to clean up stainless.
These are what I used on my only stainless revolver I owned. They don't sell them up here in Canada, I had to order them from the States. They work great and take very little effort to get the powder residue off.
