I've searched(admittedly a poor search term framer) the site and can't find any info. Are Dan large frame revolvers forged or investment cast? I had always assumed they were forged,like Smiths, but can't find any confirmation.

Investment cast. As are the small frame. With the trigger group holding the lockwork like a Ruger there is no way to forge it. It is stronger than forged because it has no side plate. Ditto for the supermags.

Strong enough, yeah, stonger than forged? No way, no how. Forgings, size for size are considerably stronger than castings, investment or not. I truly doubt the small amount of metal removed for the side plate would affect the strength of a forged frame. Investment castings are cheaper to make and require less machine work, but don't change the grain structure the way forging does.

You answered your own question that is why Rugers and DWs are considerably thicker than other revolvers (Colt, S&W). There are also other design characteristics that play into the "strength" argument. As for sideplates the strength lost would depend on how well the sideplate is fit if it is a loose fit then it would be justifiable to say that the strength of the frame would be compromised slightly.
