Remembering John Taffin 1939- March 10, 2025
I woke up this morning to learn that the firearms world has lost a giant. John Taffin, legendary gun writer and historian, has passed away. His words shaped generations of shooters, myself included—My high school years were spent reading his articles, learning from his deep knowledge and passion for sixguns, big bores, and the rich history of the American West.
Taffin wasn’t just a writer; he was a storyteller, a mentor through the pages of Guns and American Handgunner, and a champion of the classics in an ever-changing industry. His wisdom and wit made him one of the most respected voices in the world of firearms.
Rest in peace, Mr. Taffin. Your legacy is in every well-worn page and every shot fired in appreciation of the old ways.

I was saddened to hear of his passing. I enjoyed his writings. I have used many of his loads in my .44 DW. I especially appreciated his lighter loads in a bunch of big bores, as does the Wife for her .44 Mag. (S&W 329). A person doesn't always need or want wrist hurting loads. I think Mr. Taffin attributed some of his wrist arthritis to his thousands and thousands of heavy loads.
