Well tonight I opened up a recently purchased DW for a cleaning session.  This is a nice DW--good bluing, tight action, etc.... I was amazed at what I saw when I opened it up WOW.... And I've opened more than a few...

It wasn't just old grease -- It was really old and caked grease !!!  I'm talking like trailer bearing grease that was out dated 30 years ago and then stuck in a DW...

No wonder the action feels so nice and tight--the grease was acting as a filler between every moving part.  The grease was so thick and tacky the parts stuck to my fingers as I took them out.  I was amazed the action actually functioned.

This is so bad everything is getting dunked right in a can of gas for initial cleaning, including the frame.

***Bottom line for you new DW owners-- Pull the sideplate and clean your DW !!!  At least pull the sideplate and hose everything down with solvent/degreaser then re-oil.

That's about what I found in my Sentinel MK III when I first got it...except the tacky part. It was all hard as a rock, zero tackiness.lol2 Looked more like hardened rosin, than anything grease-like.Surprised

Some of it, I even had to chisel off with the sharpened end (on a bench grinder) of a tooth brush handle (not pictured). It sure feels sweet now, though.Range Time

My Colt Lawman 4" was pretty close to that, although brake cleaner & gun solvent took care of most of it...no sharpened tooth brush handle needed on that one.Laugh

Dishwasher...

LOL -- I actually use the dishwasher for reloading presses when I buy them...  Shoot them with simple green and the hose to get rid of the heavy stuff, and then off to the dishwasher.
