How could we ever calculate the lives saved by Kevlar and the similar products that it spawned?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

A very clear example of Science for sake of Science.
There was not a profit motive here (and Kevlar has proven to be hugely profitable)
Just someone doing their job, and doing it superbly
