Need some support (or clarification) of the .357 supermag. Am I correct in that there is both a .357 superman cartridge and a .357 maximum cartridge or is it just a single cartridge that runs under both names? I thought I read some where that the .357 maximum was 0.005" shorter than the .357 supermag but also noticed all .357 supermags (well, the ones I have seen) are marked ".357 maximum ctg."

As far as I know, the cartridge is .357 Maximum, and the guns chambered for them are referred as .357 Super Magnums.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yes, the original 357 Supermag was longer. This is explained in detail

There is some true 357 SuperMag brass out there and it will only work
in a firearm chambered for 357 Supermag, of course 357 max will work in the
357 Supermag just as 357 magnum and 38 special cartridges will.

Thanks for the info, exactly what I have been looking for! One last question ... how does the .357 mag / 38 spec shoot out of a .357 supermag? I have read it will have reduced accuracy, how reduced?

I think you MAY get a little less than optimum accuracy due to the "jump" of a shorter cartridge making it's way to the forcing cone of the barrel. It should not be enough to be a big problem, and .357 mag would be a good practice load, .38 Spl maybe not so much.
In addition, you need to watch for a carbon ring buildup in the chambers from the shorter cartridge. Scrub out religiously and thoroughly and this will not be a problem.

To ask something new:
I believe all the .357 SuperMags out there that I have seen are Monson made. Were there any "Wesson Firearms Co" Palmers made? Any Non-First Edition Norwich?

I have a Palmer model 40. I also have an extra 8” shroud that I ordered from Norwich that says 357 SuperMag on it. Does that help you?
