I finally got the 50th anniversary 1911 Dan Wesson. It's been on guns.com for over 6 months. The price was too high. It finally came down to a reasonable price of $2879 still too high but had these Nighthawk Mammoth grips on it. I thought I could sell them and get the gun at a really good price but they were not. I do not even think they are real at all maybe a very nice plastic pair of grips so I spent too much money on the gun most likely but they are rare and it's beautiful. I did buy this other set on grips a cheap white marble ivory grip with a DW logo it still looks pretty good. Maybe pick up a original set down the road or have Hogue make a nice set with a DW logo in it. I'm not much of a 1911 fan but the finish is fantastic on it. I can see why so many of you have one. I just wish I had picked up one when you could buy them for 2k in 2018!

Post a pic of the Mammoth grips. It's hard to believe that someone would fake a set of Mammoth grips, but there's all kinds out there. I wouldn't draw the conclusion that they are fake unless you are absolutely, 100% sure.
Also, if you are into the look of the high-polish and engraved 1911, Colt has been doing commemorative 1911's for years and sometimes you can pick them up for less than their release value, especially if its been fired.

DakodaJack I think your correct. After doing a lot of research I can't find fake ones like this anywhere. I can find solid white grips but none with a cross cut like there. I guess that's what they call this style of Mammoth grips. Then looking at them under a very large magnifying glass you can see the ripples or space in-between the tusk material. Also when you run your fingernail over it you can feel the gaps in-between where the tusk material has been glued into place. Finally looking in the screw hole yo can see the tusk material glued in a layer onto the backing plate. I looked all over and these types of grips go between $400 and $800 I know they are not nighthawks though. They look a lot like the ones sold on gunbroker the backing material looks the same. What do you think after looking at my pics?

So the experts have spoken. They are real and on the upper end of a price range since they are a cross cut style. Looks like I got a pretty good deal after all. They sell up to $800 though I will not price them that high. I know some said they would keep them on the 50th but the 50th came with a cheap set of stock grips anyway. I just love the all white look with the black medallion as they were presented when new.

Glad to know it worked out for you. Did Gene help you out?

Yes! Gene told me they are genuine Mammoth tusk Grips and a nice set at that! He said they were very nice so I could sell them at a premium! That will bring my cost way down and I can sell them for a good price! I wish I could sell them for more but still this should bring my cost of the 50th Anniversary down to maybe $2500 that's a win! I will keep eye out for a nice pair of factory grips!

Why don't you buy a set of the high-grade, imitation ivory grips and have the medallions mounted in them?. They're $100. Waiting for a pair to show up for sale could take years. Do you need the source of the grips?

I was thinking about that. I have 4 sets of medallions I was getting ready to send to Hogue and buy 4 sets of grips from them to have the medallions installed. They have some nice 1911 grips so I will most likely have them install a set of the medallions into a set of 1911 grips they sell! I listed the grips on eBay at a high price to see what they will bring. Lots of lookers but no takers at that price. I will lower the price if they do not sell. anyone here who wants a deal with not tax let me know!
