On a 15-2 .357 mag ? Is the base metal on the dan stainless? or just carbon steel or ?

15-2 is steel (not stainless). I know a couple of years ago we saw one that had all the bluing stripped off, it was base metal only. Looked interesting, I'd be a little concerned with long term corrosion resistance.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

They take blue fairly easily, so the carbon content is pretty high... Bet it would rust quick untreated.

I have one that looks like someone removed the bluing!  the porky beater you all have seen!  I haven't treated with anything accept some oil now and again.  They are steal,  Stainless won't blue at least very well!  Isn't bluing a controlled oxidation?

 I have a Uberti .357 that I have had since the late 70's. It is now covered in gunkote, but for most of that time, it was bare metal. I cold blued it several times, but always ended up re-sanding. It sat for years, at a time, in a holster and never rusted at all. I really never even oiled it. looked just like stainless steel

A lot of that (rust resistance) may depend on the humidity in your general area over the course of a year, or years...plus the actual steel makeup itself. Not all steel is created equal, by any means, not that I profess to begin to know the steel ATSM makeup of DW's.
