Why do some guns have a serial number preceeded by a letter and others only have a string of numbers?  Is there anything significant about a letter prefix?

Not sure on the average Dan's. I know you could order a Dan Wesson with your choice of serial numbers! Some of the numbers were added or caliber added in the Wesson years.
