I recently acquired KarlH's DWA 741 (41 Magnum) prior to the holidays.  It has a 10" VH barrel/shroud assembly and an 8" Vented barrel/shroud.  I am leaning towards the 8" vented barrel/shroud to save weight.

Since this will be my first hunting revolver, my question(s) to you guys are:

  1. What kind of scope would you recommend for hunting?
  2. What rings (one piece or two pieces) would you recommend as well?
  3. How would you carry it with the scope attached?  Custom chest rig or in a front chest pack?

Thanks everyone!

I know very few people want to do it but I swear by the Dan Wesson drill and tap mounts. ROCK solid - make sure to loctite and propertly torque the screws to 20 inch pounds.

If you're concerned about drilling and tapping a "vintage/old" shroud, buy a new shroud from DW and use that as your dedicated scope shroud? I tried one of the clamp-on mounts and they didn't last long and marred the top rib.

Bob at DW charges $40 to drill and tap, and $15 return shipping.

I run the discontinued Bushnell trophy handgun 2-6x32 long eye relief pistol scopes on mine. Very nice scopes for the money. But 2-6X is probably overkill if you're just deer hunting. You could probably use a Burris or Leupold 2x or 3X pistol scope to save room/weight.

Mine are target guns not hunting rigs. Using Leupold rifleman low profile rings

A bit late in reply.  I agree with using a second shroud from DW if you want to maintain the value of your shroud and the setup is nice then that you can swap between open and optics as you desire.  My 7414 'kit' is assembled that way.  The 715 has other shrouds as well so the tapped one in the photo was not the end of the world.

Does DW/CZ still make and sell the drill and tap mounts?  I didn't see any information for this item on their web pages?

Thanks ahead, Tom

You just missed them. Numrich had them just a few weeks ago as that’s where I bought my last one for the 15-2. DW hasn’t had them in stock for a bit.

Leather:  I have Diamond D Holster, Guides Choice (Chest rig), for my DW .44 8V.  The holster is made for THAT gun.  The fit and quality is great.  I can carry for 8 hours at a time.  They do not make the leather for scooped guns.

Their sister company makes nylon chest rigs (Denali Hunter) for scoped guns.  These are more "universal fit".  I bought one for a Ruger SRH (iron sights).  I haven 't used it much.  It seems like a nice unit.  Not a "made for fit" but close.

Nice people!

I have a cowboy right hand drop rig that works perfectly for any of my DW pistols, large or small frame.  I tried to look at it for branding, but unfortunately there isn’t any and I’ve owned it for probably a decade now and cannot remember from where I purchased it.  Sorry!

Thanks guys for your feedback and insights.

About two weeks ago I went to a local gun show and I had my spare 741 8" shroud with me to look around on who would wanted to drill it to mount some rings on it.  When I came across several gunsmiths telling about this Burris scope at another table.  That guy showed it to me and we could not find a part number on it.  But all he knew that it was a "Long Eye Relief" Burris scope that attaches to a vented rib pistol shroud.

I showed him my barrel shroud and low & behold, it looked like a perfect fit.  It was about 6" long and had about 6 side clamps that fitted the spacing on the shroud's vented rib.  So I took several pics on it and asked him if wouldn't mind holding for me until I did some research on it.

I scoured the internet and this site for Burris scope mounts and saw some that had one long clamp bar on each side, but the one I looked at had three smaller ones on each side.  I even went thru many pages on this site as well.  Finally I saw some pics that referenced a Burris LU-NT-DW 410364 Stainless Steel reference for $45 on some vintage gun part site.

So I called the vendor back and asked if he had some rings go on that base mount and he did!!  1" Burris rings that twist on in the front of the bar and screwed on the back of the bar.  He said $50 for everything and now I have it on my 8" shroud.  I even found some older 41mag load swc 210gr from one of the other gun show vendors as well.  All in all - about $100 for base, rings and small box of ammo.  Really satisfied on my quest/find.

Thanks everyone.tempImageSrHzMD.jpgImage Enlarger

good job.  The base alone frequently brings $100 on eBay.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
