Ok, so I have a Model 14 with the pork chop barrel that has the recessed nut. I bought two shrouds and barrels - a 4" and a 2.5".
The 4" has the recess for the nut at the end of the barrel, just like my other 4" barrel. The 2.5" however does not have a recess. Is this typical for the shorter barrel or do I have a barrel from another model?
If it is the wrong one then I guess I'll have a like new short barrel to sell.... 🙁

It sounds like you probably have a shroud from an earlier model. Originally Dan's came with an exposed barrel nut and pork chop shrouds. Then for a very short time they were offered with recessed nuts and pork chop shrouds before the finial version that is common today.
We've got a few Pork Chop gurus on the forum so they will have better info than me.

It sounds like you have a barrel/shroud for a Model 11/12. If you install the barrel with the correct cylinder gap, and slide on the shroud, does the barrel protrude beyond the end of the shroud?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Sounds like you have an early exposed nut style, with that 2.5″ barrel assembly. Here's an example pic, shamelessly swiped from Dusty…'cuz well, he has one handy & I don't.

Charger very nice photo illustrating the external nut. Isn't the nut on some of the early ones round?

Actually, I cheated & swiped one of Dusty's pics, because it was quick & easy...I was lazy...ok, it was terrible of me to do.
Here, I'll attempt to rectify the pic theft by posting some of my own. Yes, some had round nuts...so far, I think we've determined these are fixed barrels.
Here (again ) is a standard removeable external barrel nut...
And here's an extra pic, for good measure! 😀

Well, at least I have a brand new 4" barrel for my DW in case my existing one is messed up.
So, this is the 2" one - yes, the barrel extends from the shroud when it is installed and gapped.
I will post in the FS section
