Over the past several months, I have read Forum members' opinions on certain scope mounts and rings such as brands, drill-and-tap vs. clamp-on, etc.  One thing that I determined is that there are many opinions.  I have a lot of experience with long arms scope mounting, but I have absolutely no experience with revolvers.  So, I would appreciate some candid opinions on the following.  (I plan to use the revolver for hunting.)

I recently acquired a 445sm with a 10″ vented shroud that I want to scope.  However, I do not want to permanently damage the shroud by drilling and tapping so I'm leaning toward  clamp-on style mounts (e.g., B-Square) or rings (e.g., Leupold).  My big concern, however, is whether clamp on mounts or rings can tolerate 445sm recoil (i.e., will they hold firm and maintain a consistent POA).  If not, I will have to consider drilling and tapping.  Your opinions and experiences are greatly appreciated.  Thanks.Confused

Personally, I don't think there is anything on the planet stronger than the B-square, EXCEPT a drill / tap with Epoxy bedding (really permanent).

I thought the 445 was factory drilled?

Actually, due to the weight of the SuperMag, the recoil is, in my opinion, less than that of a .44 Magnum.  It's certainly no worse.

I had my shroud drilled and taped for a mount on the 357 Max.

When I bought my 445 the guy before me used the individual clamp on rings and they marred the shroud. I think most clamp on mounts are going to leave some kind of mark even if it's small as you are clamping steel to steel and it has to be tight to keep things from moving.

Why not get an 8" barrel and shroud drilled and tapped for hunting. It would be a little shorter and lighter with a scope mounted. Then the 10" is still virgin. The 8" shroud could be used on any super mag just ge the right calliber barrel.

That sounds like a great idea, Tigger.  That way he won't damage the original shroud, maintaining it's collector value.

I would like to thank everyone for their input.  I didn't think about Tigger's idea.  I agree with Mike it's a great idea.  In retrospect, the idea now seems so obvious...and I thought I was done shopping.

GG,

As Tigger stated the extar drilled shroud would be the best option.  I do have a B-Square clamp mount on a 10" 44 magnum and have shot it with full load rounds often and never have had a sight alignment issue, the B-Square's do leave a mark if you remove them that needs to be ploished out to look original.

In my member's collection I have a shot of the 414 with a drilled and tapped scope sitting on an 8" ported barrel which would be the same as a 10" in length.  Check it out, it would give you an idea what it would look like.  It has a 2.5-8 Leupold sitting on it.

I recently found that the Leupold Colt Python rings which mount on the vent frame also work on the Dan Wesson Vent frame of my .357 Supermag.  Even after a session at the range, the rings were still tight. The only difference between these and the ones for the Dan Wesson appears to be the cutout in the middle which is required on the Python.  While they are also discontinued, you may find some on Ebay, etc.
