Saw a nice fixed barrel Palmer .44 magnum today, did they make many of those?

No telling how many of them were produced but they come around every now and then.  Sometimes they can bring a premium, especially one in mint cond. and if a collector is looking to fill a gap.

Depending on the price, I would have snagged it in a second!laugh

Since there are no definitive production numbers available, most of us are left to speculation & guesswork. Bummer.   So my speculative theory is that there were substantially fewer .44 FB's produced than 15-2 FB .357's in most barrel length's. That's according to what I've seen advertised for sale on most web sites I've frequent.

FB's are more of a niche item amongst DW aficionados, due to the fact that the barrels aren't interchangeable like the other models.

Is the thread pitch the same on these guns as it is on the standard 44??  IOW Can I remove a FB model barrel and install a conventional barrel & shroud (after I install a shroud guide pin)??

They are the same on the 715-2/15-2 series. I have a Palmer 715-2 that has been changed from fb to interchangeable. I would think that would apply to the large frame models as well.

As common as 44's are you might consider picking up the interchangeable model and selling the fixed barrel.  What is the lenght of your fixed barrel?

Jody has the right idea. However, one rational for converting to interchangable barrel is if you have a 3" or 5"  fixed barrel that is able to be converted to interchangable mode. There might be real value created in doing that. Consider the premium that a 3" python goes for in comparison to a 21/2" or 4". Ditto for a 5" er.

Fixed barrel .41 Mags would be even more scarce. Wonder who might have one of those? The fixed barrels are installed at the factory with 100 ft/lb torque.

Very nice. It looks to be 4". Most of the - 2 fixed barrels are 3,5 or 7", although they did make 4,6,and 8" too.

I have a stainless Palmer 715  3" Barrel Assembly that I don't think was originally on a frame. I suspect they were available from the factory. It does have the slant on the muzzle. I also have a blue Norwich 15-2 3"  VH that has no slant. Now I just need a Norwich 15-2 to put it on.

I am a proud new owner of a heavy lug Dan wesson fixed barrel 744 .44mag 6" barrel.

Waiting for it to arrive at my FFL off gun broker.

Originally I had overlooked the fact it had no vents and no barrel nut.

Then i took another look at the pictures and it caught my eye. " Wait wheres the vents ?  And theres no barrel nut?  ". For a moment I was worried Id gotten a hatchet job aftermarket modified revolver.

Then I searched the forums and realized I stumbled on a rare version of the DW 744.

Can't wait to get her in my paws. A Palmer original.

Grip custom-made from standard zebra grip after Hogue model? I guess zebra grips were no longer available when fixed-barrels were made...

Ya know I dont know. I dont think they were OEM either as I couldn't find any with finger choils from the factory.

Zebras were available with large frame up to CZ ownership, when the only offering was a 715. Those finger grip zebras are probably made by LB. If so, they will have LB burned on the inside.
