I recently bought a HS / Dan Sentinel mkIII in exceptional cond. I've tried finding and reading all the material collected on the HS / Dan's and my piece seems to be a Fixed barrel BUT not fixed like the way the other Dan's are. The barrel nut is machined with only tightening wrench abutments. the abutment needed to Un-thread has been machined into a small slope with no way to get a "Bite" to remove. What I'd like to know is this HS 'Fixed" method. Or because my revolvers serial is pretty close to the serial stated as beginning the HS contract if this was a very short production idea that was scrapped. Please take a look at the provided pics and let me know if you guys have seen this before or have knowledge concerning a proper way to remove the nut and get a replacement. I'd like to be able to get the yoke / crane serviceable in the event that something happens. If something happens as of now, there's no way to replace or fix. And some day I might run across a proper pork chop barrel assembly that i'd like to try. Thank you guys very much for your time and knowledge.

I have a special place in my heart for the High Standard pork. Yours is very nice. The balance on a 4" porkchop is close to perfect IMHO. Now, your gun. Somebody milled the back of the nut of to create a "fixed barrel gun". I would suspect it was a requirement for some LEO to use it as a duty weapon. You may be able to carefully grind a perpendicular edge to the slanting cut to remove the nut. Maybe some of the handier members can give you advice. I have a barrel nut that was a factory nut to use on a model 11 or 12 to make them a fixed barrel. No slots. I keep it stash away so as not to accidentally use it. Lol. New York City for one required the fixed barrel version in order to use it for duty. What ever you do, try not to damage the shroud. High Standard never sold extra barrel assemblies . Consequently the are rare as hen's teeth. Of course, Dan Wesson shrouds fit but do not have the name rollmarked on the side of the shroud. Looking at it again it might be possible to mill a socket wrench to fit The gap and be a makeshift tool . The tooth only has to fit up to the slanting edge to work. A barrel tool might be milled on a slant too. Good luck.

I'm not an HS expert by any score, however, from the pics you provided, it looks to me like the bevel to prevent barrel-nut removal was done post production because it appears not to be blued.
Now, I may be looking at it wrong, but in any case, if it was mine I'd take a drift to it and remove it and put on a proper barrel nut.

thank you fella's for the replies. ole dog you may be onto something! I know this revolver came into my store by way of a former NY resident. Maybe he was a former LEO at one time. I'm so torn about this. Its an wonderful revolver with perfect balance I agree. But MAN! the kid in me wants all the goodies to go along too!

Welcome and I agree this was done to prevent changing! Check with EWK as he had a hex wrench that was a pass through where as you would washer and bolt through should it be tight! I think it would come off then you could grab some pork or the adapter EWK has made to make the pork shop frame accept the modern shrouds! Keep us posted!

While there is good background info and some firsthand experience on DWF with the non-interchangeable barrel guns, they seem to have been DW guns, not High Standards.
Looking at your pictures, the barrel nut does seem to be very neatly and cleanly "smoothed out", and that may possibly be something done during manufacture.
I am a 1977 Dan Wesson owner that very successfully rounded out the barrel nut on my 15-2, and it went back under warranty to Dan Wesson to be fixed. Due to my own clueless attempts to fix my problem, I managed to get my barrel nut looking pretty much like yours. My continued tinkering resulted in very smoothed and polished slots on my barrel nut, I just did not have the common sense to stop
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I think for now I'm going to enjoy it in its factory state. I've been prompted to get in touch with another gentleman and hopefully all this might help give a tiny bit more clarity to the whole HS/ Dan beautiful hist. Thank you all very much.
