New to the form and Dan Wesson Revolvers and have some questions. Always wanted a DW revolver and found this one at a local gun show last yesterday. Appeared to be in good condition with strong rifling and not much use.

Working on identifying it and have some questions. I can tell it is a model 14 pork chop but not sure on the year of manufacture. Stamp for model says "Model 14-M", SN # 22261. Any idea what the M stands for? The finish is a matt-stainless and sights are fixed so does this make it a service revolver? Also if I want to swap out to a 6" barrel and shroud will any model 15 barrel and shroud work? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to DWF. This is a Model 14 from (probably) 1973. I'm not familiar with the "-M", it may refer to a specialty finish. This is not a Stainless Steel gun, it has some type non standard finish, either factory or aftermarket. The Hogue grip is definitely an add on

I'm going to stick my neck out here.  Someone who knows better will cut it off for me.

I'm going to suggest that your gun is a mat-nickle finish gun, not stainless.

I believe that if it was stainless it would be a model 714.

Just my guess as I'm not really well-educated about the models 11, 12, 8, 9, and 14.

Welcome to DWF from the Bluegrass. It is a Mod 14. I do not recognize the finish. At least not from the photos. Looks like an aftermarket finish, though it does appear to be well done. I notice the barrel is still blue, as is the ejector star and rod and trigger and hammer. It is possible the latter two would be. Rear sight, I think would be but front sight may not be exact to the frame but, I dont think they would be dark blued. I am no expert, but of the DW's I've had opportunity to see and study, that is close to the norm. Some of you collectors here may know  more than I have learned yet..

Thanks for all the input. Great wealth of knowledge on this site. I agree on the matt nickel finish (looks similar to a S&W 642 I had).  I broke the pistol down for a cleaning an the internal components are blued but the frame is silver similar to the exterior but not as vibrant. The finish is well done as it also covers the internal areas of cylinder and  every nook and cranny of revolver. I need to get a barrel removal wrench and I can pull the barrel and look in the shroud to see if the color changes. What every the finish is it wipes very easy is very smooth. Thanks again for all the input. Just need to figure out what the M stands for on the model 14-M.

For a barrel removal tool, contact EWK Arms.  See the ad in the right-hand column.  --->>

Welcome from South Carolina.  That was my first thought too, nickel finish.  The top strap profile is interesting.  Is the rear sight original?

The rear sight is per factory as far as I can tell. I found a few pics via google showing the similar rear sight.

I think this is a Model 14 (no dash) that has had a not original factory blue finish

There is something quite different about this gun. The shroud and frame radii are different and i believe the height of the sights don't match. The top strap is sloped also. That dovetail rear sight is most unusual.

Very nice looking dan. I'll bet it cleans up very easy after a range outing. It may be Electroless finish. The slight bluish tint may mean it is a chrome though. The rear sight I think is an early model 14 type. Quite a brute of a gun. I bet it is very accurate with the right ammo.

Geez you guys, I thought you knew these by now. I guess I need to be posting more Porkchop pics & info daily, so you don't get rusty like I've seen in this thread.poke

Yes, the gun pictured above is a Model 14 (no dash), and the sights are completely correct. When these are wearing a snubby barrel, they can sometimes look a little out of proportion (I think they look tough), but with a longer barrel they appear more "normal". Here's a pair of mine wearing 4" BA's, for example.

I haven't seen a "-M" marked on the frame yet, but I would wager that it does indeed mean it was to be pulled from the normal production line, for a matte nickle finish. This box label is from a 14-1 model, and I'm only showing this so you can see that they had either type available back then from the factory.

Tamusdh, I do believe you have a factory correct Model14. If that finish isn't original, then someone has done an excellent re-finish at some point. Congrats on landing that one, and thanks for showing it off!drool

Oh, and regarding Maxwell's rear sight thought, the sights on the 14's are a "fixed drift" site. You can gently tap them left or right, to fine tune your POA. The rear sights were changed to the more common fixed sight on the 14-1 & 14-2 models. And, you'll also notice that the top rib on the shroud is a lot less pronounced because of the lower rear sight & top strap.

That's all folks, class dismissed!big-grin

Thanks for all the input!

Yes I did list it for sale as I really do want a 6" or 8" barrel model Dan Wesson and figured it would take some time to finds a model 14 barrel for this pistol in similar finish. I find sometimes it is easier to sell or trade for what you are looking for.

Again thanks to all who have provided input.
