Hello, I have been a DW owner for about a year. I traded a Rock Island 1911 for a DW 357 pistol pack my father in-law got from his father. I believe his father purchased this gun in 1978 but can't find any documentation on what serial numbers were made in that year. Also was this an even trade for a Rock Island 1911 that is valued at approx $500 or did I get a better deal? What would you guess the value of this gun is. It is in excellent condition.

First, Welcome to the Forum.  You did very well in that trade.  It would sell for nearly double that if you found the right buyer.

If you could please re-size your photos IAW the guidelines, those on tablets could better see your Dan.

Thanks, Ron

Welcome to DWF, I think you did very well on your trade for a 1977 Pistol Pack

Please resize your photos to approximately 600x800 in compliance with DWF Policy

No problem, I resized.

Big pictures can cause Forum access for members with older computers and slow connections.

No worries, it was an easy fix

Thanks for the help. That may be why I couldn't change it.

Im not sure if I should shoot this gun. I don't think it was ever shot in the first place.

dwf-welcome

Welcome to the forum from another floridian!  You definitely got a bargain, especially in Florida. DW's are much harder to find here than in the Northeast. The VHS shrouds are icing on the cake. The real joy will come when you get it to the range. Then you will catch DWAS for sure.

Check out EWK (right side bar) and get a barrel wrench from him. It's much easier and better for your gun.

My position on the "shoot/don't shoot" question is:

If there is a hook on it so I can put it on the wall and look at it, then I do so.

Otherwise, I shoot the sumbitch!

I've shot an 80's model just like this one. It just wasnt a pistol pack. It was a 357 with the 6" barrel. I did however love shooting the gun. And it's almost impossible to find ammunition here in florida.

Dang, that's a beautiful Pac!!drool

My answer to the "shoot it or not" question is; if I deem it too purty to shoot, I'll find another one just like it that has been shot & shoot the crap out of that one.laugh Yes, this may also lead to a stiff case ofdwas but it's okay...dwas happens to all of us sooner or later.big-grin

BTW, yes you absolutely got the better part of that trade in my opinion.wink

Welcome to the forum from PA. You did great on that trade, just look at what Pacs go for on Gunbroker. I bought a nice Pac locally 2 months ago, I paid $999 and am happy with it.

I would shoot it, if you take care of it and clean it afterwards it wont be any worse for the wear. Dan Wessons are very sturdy. Or do like many of us here and get another to use as a shooter.

Welcome to the fold. You came out on top of that trade for sure. Shoot or not, simple to me, if your intent is to flip the pac for profit don,t shoot it will command the best price unfired. Otherwise smut that baby up! range-time Just my two cents worth.

They don't lose a lot of value as long as they are taken care of.  Shoot it!
