I don't see much currently offered in .40 S&W. I was wondering if Dan Wesson would/could customize an RZ-10 to use both the original 10mm barrel and a new .40 S&W barrel?  I have one other gun chambered in .40 but it is a striker fired DAO Sig P250 and it just can't hold a candle to the accuracy and feel of the 1911 platform.  Has anybody had them do a mod like this?  Also, does anybody know of any available offerings in .40?  I've been wanting an SSC for a long time, but they never come up.

I would think a local smith could fit the correct link to a .40 barrel-here's your 1911 40S&W magazines. Of course, I'll be happy to help find you a Mayhem...

Thanks Ron.  I thought about a local smith but wondered if it would be better to send it 'home' for a make over.  I may call Keith and see what he says.  OH, and I think a Mayhem, while super cool, is a bit out of my price range smile.  I know Supermagfan has  something in a 1911 .40 but don't remember if he ordered it that way or had it reworked.  Maybe he will see this.

I like the caliber but I'm too old school to really like these striker fired guns, the triggers are just not to my liking.

I think you can special order one in .40 and as you mentioned they did make some SSC's, but they are hard to find.  I did stumble on a PM-40 about two years ago and it is a great shooter.

Good luck in your quest.

Yes, I'm sure I did, I remember thinking, 'I need one of these!'  I couldn't remember if you bought it new or used or had it done custom.

I remember reading a thread on the 1911 forum where somebody was asking Dan Wesson Firearms to make a .40 cal. model again. If I remember right Keith Lawton responded that the demand was not there to support a regular production run, but they would readily build a custom order pistol in that caliber.

Really, you are about due to own a custom ordered Dan Wesson, Chris poke

UPDATE:  I was on the CZ/DW webstore and I saw that they had full size 1911 barrels in 40 S&W for a around $100.  Sounded like a great price so I ordered on and several 40 cal mags to go with it.  It showed up today and I installed it in my PM7-S, fit like a glove!  Now a question, do I need to make any spring changes prior to shooting it?  Its snowing today so I don't see a range trip for  some time.  I just want it properly configured before I hit the range.  I've never done a caliber swap on a 1911 before so I'm at the bottom of the learning curve.  Unless this is a Murphy's Law issue, it seems like a very simple conversion.  For the price, I didn't see too much of a down side.

This may help answer that question.

1911forum.com is my "go to" 1911 site, hands down, every time.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks Steve, I read that before and thought that I'd try the barrel in my PM7-S 45acp since the springs is supposed to be 18.5 for that and the 40 is listed at 16.  That's only a 2.5 difference so I'll see what happens with some full power 40's.  Should be fun.  I hope it works, because this would be about the cheapest gun upgrade I've done in a long time!smile

I'd be interested in knowing how this works out for you. I'm not a huge fan of .40 S&W, but if I can convert my PM1-S  for the cost of a barrel and some magazines, that is pretty much a "no brainer", and I specialize in No Brains

I had a few minutes tonight after work so I went out back and test fired a few rounds of 40 from my PM7.  I  had mixed results, a few FTE's and a few stove pipes.  Looks like the slide was coming forward too soon and trying to ram another round in while the spent one was being ejected.  I didn't have any other springs so I put the barrel in my RZ-10 10mm and tried again.  I had much better luck, almost no FTE's and I found that once I switched to my old 10 mm mags there were no FTE's.  I ran five shots through as fast as I could pull the trigger and it was smooth as silk.  I think the spring weights of the 10 and 40 are closer than the 45 springs in my PM7.  I think it would work fine in any of my full sized Dan's, but I suspect spring changes would be required.  I may order an assortment of springs and experiment with a few different guns but for now at least, I can shoot 10 and 40 out of my RZ 10 with only a barrel swap.

BTW, I think that once the 40 cal mags are left loaded for a few days, they will work better in the RZ-10, their springs are a bit tight being brand new.

Making a .40 from a .45, not as simple as a barrel swap.  I have a PM-9, SSC .40, .45 Valor, and a custom Silverback in .45. I liked my SSC so much, that I called Keith to have a custom Silverback made in .40, and found out that it was more than just a barrel swap, but am having one done anyway. Can hardly wait to get it. Could hardly believe it when I found a new SSC a little over a year ago. Used ones were going for more than I paid for this new one.  It's really a great pistol.
