I have seen many change from a standard to FlGN...why?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yes, I saw that discussion and did not want to drift.

To answer you original question, I would not change a 1911 from a GI to any other style, the same way that I will not change from a FLGR to a GI

...but why, I can see the physical differences, but functionally, why is one better in one gun over another ?

Years ago, I had a 70 series GC Natl Match and someone put in a FLGR...I was talking to a .45 enthusiast, and he told me to take it out, and I did replace it with a GI type.

I don't think there is a real functional difference. Countless millions of rounds have been launched from 1911's with the standard GI guiderod very successfully. Comes down to aesthetics, and possibly the addition of a little more weight up front. There are actually FLGR's that are hollow and filled with (I think) mercury to add more weight up front

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

They purpose is to make the disassembly and reassembly of a 1911 even more of an esoteric art than it already is. That's it!

"Life does not have to be perfect, just lived".

"Deserves got nothin' to do with it".

Photo, I think the 'theory' is that the FLGR allows less binding of the recoil spring while being/under compression making slide speed more uniform. Or I may be full of it…..wouldn't be the first time. It's one of those ongoing arguments with no definitive answer. Seems like I read one of the major custom pistol makers disagrees on their value, can't remember which one.

All my 1911s have the GI setup, except the Para with the Clark 460 Rowland conversion, which was part of the 'kit'. With the heavy recoil spring used it probably does help with reassembly.

I'm not an expert on the platform, the above was just my opinion…..as SigWolf said, it just changes the assembly/disassembly procedure. Maybe just an answer to a question never asked….just something to sell? I don't know...wink

This is one of those endless debates with advocates on both sides. My PM1-S has a 2 piece FLGR, I have never changed it just because??

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Thanks guys.  I guess the next thing to do is to have it "pinned & recessed" too.
