I have a Dan Wesson 744V with an 8 inch barrel. Can I buy a 4 inch barrel & shroud for this gun. I like to carry a handgun when hunting & scouting, but would prefer a shorter barrel. Also would the compensated barrel be worth the trouble? I've heard of problems with Dan Wesson compensated barrels.. Thanks

Welcomeol hunter, Yes barrels and shrouds can be found on the auction sites but 4 inchers are rare. DW still produces them while a little pricey they can be had. Look on the right side of the screen under FAQ and where can I order parts. I have not heard of problems with the comped barrels, just maybe you heard about the older ported barrels clogging and sticking the shroud, that is common. I am sure someone here with more experience with the comps will chime in soon.

Thanks, I found the 09 price list. The barrel & shroud are a little pricey but still cheaper than a new 44. I will be checking into one. The problems a friend of mine had was with an older ported barrel & he had some issues. (mabe he didn't clean it often).  I'm not sure I understand the difference between a ported barrel & a compensated barrel?

Thanks for the info.

Welcome

LB is correct as far as I understand it. DW tried the porting first, but its not an optimal design as the lead and powder get caked between the barrel and the shroud. The compensated design is different and uses a special deep barrel nut ( which requires the special barrel nut tool). I have never seen the comp BA in person, so I don't really know how it is put together, though I suspect it works very well.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Here's a .44 Mag with a compensated BA. The nut is behind the muzzle about 1-3/4". The front nut is removed by hand and then the extended wrench slips into the muzzle to remove the barrel nut which is like a regular barrel nut.

I have both types of the ported / comp barrels.  As long as you take the old style ported barrels apart after each outing, clean the outside of the barrell and the inside of the shroud (a 12-gauge shotgun brush works great for this) there is no problem using the old style comp barrels.  Just remember to always use jacketed ammo with the old style, no lead.  I have a newer style comp BA for my 414SM and really like it for hunting.

Ah yeah, the "mug".  Hmmm, should have kept that out of the pic. Well all I can say is I'd add that it's regrettable things ended up that way.

Thanks for the picture jaggman, I see the difference now. I think I'll look for a short compensated  barrel. The Hogue grips look good to.
